Dr. Boyle joined Tucson Eye Care as of May 2011. He moved to Tucson from Deming New Mexico where he provided comprehensive eye care for patients from a large geographic area of southwest New Mexico for the last eight years. This included cataract surgery, pterygium surgery, and blepheroplasty. Laser therapy was provided for glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, peripheral retinal tears, secondary cataracts and retinal vein occlusions. Intraocular injections were given to patients for wet macular degeneration, retinal vein occlusions and diabetic macular edema. He also provided emergency room eye care and emergency surgery for severe eye injuries at the hospitals in Silver City and Deming.
Dr Boyle received his Masters degree in Microbiology from Ohio State University. He went on to do research in Molecular Biology at The Ohio State University Department of Internal Medicine and The Cleveland Clinic Foundation Department of Heart and Hypertension Research before joining the medical school at Case Western Reserve University. While in medical school at CWRU he continued to pursue his interest in research and won the Dean’s first prize for research by an MD student in 1998.
Dr. Boyle did his Ophthalmology residency at Case Western Reserve University Hospitals in Cleveland. He followed this with a one year Fellowship in Medical Retina and Uveitis at the John Moran Eye Center in Salt Lake City. There he helped author a chapter on Pars Planitis for the textbook Ophthalmology by Yanoff and Duker, worked part time in the emergency triage eye clinic, and participated in the phase three trial of the drug Macugen, the first FDA approved drug for wet macular degeneration.
Dr. Boyle is Board Certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology and currently maintains a medical license in Arizona and New Mexico. He is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, The American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, the Arizona State Medical Society, the New Mexico State Medical Society, the Arizona Ophthalmology Society, the New Mexico Academy of Ophthalmology and the Lions Club.
Dr. Boyle moved to Tucson from New Mexico to pursue better educational opportunities for his three children and continues to enjoy hiking the great open spaces of the southwest with his wife and children whenever he can.
Dr. Boyle’s particular interests in Ophthalmology include:
- Cataract surgery with aspheric and toric intraocular lens implants.
- Evaluation of common medical retina conditions including macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, and the use of high risk medication like hydroxychloraquin.
- Evaluation of common eye inflammatory conditions such as recurrent iritis and herpetic eye disease including shingles.
