Cataracts and Cataract Surgery

One of our areas of expertise is in the management of cataracts. Our eye surgeons have collectively performed more than 40,000 cataract procedures using state-of-the-art technologies. Cataracts are a clouding of the natural lens of the eye resulting in blurring of vision and/or light sensitivity.

To learn more about cataract treatment options call us at 520-722-4700 to schedule an appointment.

The treatment of cataracts involves a removal of the cloudy lens and replacement with a clear lens implant. This is a cataract operation. In general, this is an excellent surgery with better than 99% chance of visual improvement. The entire operation is done through a 1/8th inch incision which makes the procedure safer and allows for a rapid visual recovery. Like all surgeries, there are some risks. These include, but are not limited to, infection, swelling, bleeding, glaucoma, and retinal detachment.

In eyes that are otherwise healthy, there are opportunities to introduce state-of-the-art lenses that can decrease the need for glasses after surgery. These include:

  • Toric lenses to treat astigmatism
  • Trifocal lenses to help with distance, intermediate, and near vision
  • Light adjustable lenses for the most precise vision possible.

Astigmatism

Astigmatism occurs when the surface of the eye has more of an oval than a round shape. Light entering the eye from different directions is focused in different places. This is typically corrected with glasses or contact lenses.

At the time of cataract surgery, we have the opportunity to correct astigmatism using recent technological advances.

Toric intra ocular lenses have astigmatic corrections and can be aligned to neutralize corneal astigmatism. We have had very good experience with these lenses with 90% of patients who received the lens having 20/30 or better vision without glasses.

The most advanced technology is available in the form of a light adjustable lens. This allows us to measure a patient’s astigmatism 3 weeks after cataract surgery and use and ultraviolet light delivery system to adjust the power of the intra ocular lens to optimize visual precision without glasses. In FDA studies 99% of patients having this lens were able to see 20/30 or better.
